Overall Opinion:
Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum is one of the more expensive face serums on the market from one of the most well-known skincare companies. This anti-aging serum claims to target skin issues ranging from fine lines and wrinkles, to uneven skin tone and texture. While the serum fails to deliver on all of the claims it makes, it does an excellent job when it comes to evening out skin tone and reducing the appearance of sunspots and other complexion issues.
This face serum is water based, but it does have a silicone texture upon application. Unlike other serums, however, the silicone aspect of the product did not increase oil on my face, so this face serum is a great fit for all skin types, as advertised, and was easy for me to use both morning and night, as directed.
At the top end of the price range for face serums, the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum is really only worth the money if your main skincare complaint is discoloration and splotchy skin tone and texture. While it excels in this area, it is a flop in other areas, specifically reducing fine lines and wrinkles, or adding hydration and plumpness to the skin. So while this is a great fit for a certain audience, this is not the case for someone looking to undo damage and rewind the clock on their face.
Detailed Opinion:
Texture/Feel
Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum is a peach-colored, water-based serum.
While it does not contain any oil products, the texture of the serum is very silicone feeling. This face serum didn’t leave a greasy feeling on my skin, but did make my skin feel void of any hydration, which is common with these types of serums. While my skin didn’t feel dry when applying it, it did give off the appearance of dull, dry skin.
Application
Applying the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair face serum is super simple, and should be incorporated into your daytime and nighttime routine.
While most serums should be followed up with a face moisturizer, this serum specifically instructs to use an SPF of 15 or higher after daytime application, so I made sure to follow that instruction. I tend to avoid silicone-feeling serums during my daytime routine since they often leave me extra oily in my T-zone, but this serum didn’t seem to do that.
After cleansing and toning my skin, I applied two pumps of the Clinique serum onto my face. Unlike other serums, this product does not advise that you use it on your neck, so I stuck to the face area only rather than dragging it down. The product was easy to glide over my skin, and began to absorb with a rubbing motion.
Drying Time
The Clinique Smart Serum doesn’t really have a drying time. Since the product is thicker and more silicone-based, it feels dry upon application. I felt that as I rubbed it onto my face, it instantly dried once I moved onto a different area. In fact, I was able to immediately apply my skin moisturizer on top of the product without feeling like the serum still needed to absorb into my skin. This is why my skin was left feeling a bit dry and in need of hydration once the serum has been applied.
Smell
Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum has absolutely no odor. I’ve experienced some serums that smell when pumped into my hands, but the smell dissipated once applied to my skin, but this face serum has no odor period, which is actually something they advertise. So this is a great fit for anyone who is sensitive to certain scents, or any scents at all, in their skincare and beauty products.
Immediate Results
While I’ve given the Clinique Smart Serum a pretty good rating, the immediate results I experienced with this product were poor. I personally don’t like any silicone feeling products as they weirdly make my skin feel parched and oily at the same time. While this serum didn’t increase the oil on my face, it did leave my skin feeling dry upon application.
I also found that some of the product didn’t seem to fully absorb into my skin. I applied this product at night initially, and when I woke up in the morning and rubbed my face, a thick layer of product remained. Have you ever had it where you hands are dirty and you rub them together and balls of dirt come together? This was happening on my face, but with skincare products. My skin wasn’t actually dirty, but that’s how it felt when I woke up.
On a positive note, my face wasn’t any greasier than it normally is in the morning, which is rare for a serum that feels like this. However, beyond that positive immediate result, no other initial changes were noticed when first applied.
Long Term Results
My immediate results with the product were less than ideal, but the long term results (or result, in this case) were pretty impressive. I didn’t see a decrease in my fine lines or wrinkles, nor did I experience any lifting sensation to my skin, as advertised. However, when it came to evening out skin tone and texture, and increasing overall radiance of the skin, I was extremely impressed with the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair face serum. After just a few days of use, I began to see some of my annoying, extremely noticeable sunspots lighten up significantly. I even had multiple spots that I thought were freckles that completely disappeared after using the product.
I also found that the redness I often have around my nose, inner cheeks, and chin was completely gone. This is one of the first serums I’ve used that makes my skin look all one color, versus different splotches of discoloration and redness like I normally have. So when it came to evening out my skin tone, and leaving my skin looking radiant and dewy, the Clinique serum hit it out of the ballpark.
Unfortunately, that was really the only result I had with this serum, although it was a great one! I didn’t experience any other anti-aging results, which was a bit disappointing.
Price/Value
At $89.00 for 1.7 fl oz, the Clinique Smart Custom-Repair face serum is a great value for a certain audience. If you’re main skincare complaint is uneven skin tone and texture, this face serum is absolutely worth the money. Clinique also gives you more product than most other companies, which usually come in at around 1 fl oz. However, the cost of this Clinique face serum is definitely on the higher end of the price range for face serums, so if you’re looking for an anti-aging product that targets the many aspects of aging, this misses the mark completely.
